Hi, I’m Jill and this is my story
from wide-eyed spectator to aerialist trainer.

Joining the Circus

One moment changed the trajectory of my life and opened up a brand new world of being an aerialist.   It started at a dinner with a casual comment from friends.   They were in a circus and wanted us to see the show.   After being mesmerized by the Triton Trouper Circus, I too dreamed of joining the circus.  I waited a whole year for my opportunity.  I walked into that gym for the first time with no formal dance, gymnastic, rock climbing, or any other remotely related experience, but I was hooked.  Over the next several years, I performed in multiple aerial acts including swinging trapeze, static trapeze, and Spanish web.

Creating Community

Life happens - I had a move to Knoxville, TN, and a new husband and baby.  An article buried in the lifestyle section of the newspaper brought me to the next chapter of my aerial story.  I had just found what would become my circus family.  From our collective love for aerial and circus, Dragonfly Aerial Arts Studio was born.  Dragonfly turned into a special place, a non-profit with a community focus. With this new community’s support, I not only had the opportunity to develop my skills as a performer, but I also began to teach.

Growing as an Aerialist & Teacher

My experiences as part of Dragonfly opened my eyes to new possibilities of the power of aerial arts to transform lives.   I learned the real power of collaboration producing the Circus Extravaganza, our full length, volunteer run, annual show.  I witnessed the transformation from apprehension to surprise to pride as I helped individuals with special needs have their first aerial experience.  But my favorite moments were (and still are) the happy dance when students come down and realize they just accomplished something that moments before they had thought was impossible.

Sharing My Passion

A little more life and a move to Charlotte, NC, has led me to the creation of Whirlybird Aerial Fitness.  This time, life not only included another move but injuries, a health scare, and a few more years added to my age and body.  My focus has shifted to helping other women find a connection with their bodies that an aerial practice can bring. The internal focus that comes when you are upside down and hanging on by a hand and knee.  I want others to find the joy of becoming stronger and discovering their capabilities.  I believe every person can improve their mental and physical well being with aerial fitness regardless of past, current, or future obstacles.
